EDIT 4100 Intern
Fall 2018, I served as one of the interns for the EDIT 4100 – Makerspace course. I met with the class on Thursdays, where my role consisted of observing course activities, classroom setup, and various assistive activities with the course. The Thursday sessions were structured to prepare specific groups for their Barrow sessions the following week. I provided resources for the Scratch session and offered technical assistance.
Instruction Assistant - Black Girls Code (Atlanta chapter)
To gain more experience working with youth in an informal technical session, I volunteered to be an instructional assistant for the Atlanta Black Girls Code organization. The Black Girls Code organization was formed to introduce, support, and encourage young African American girls to participate in STEM-related activities. I chose this organization as it deals with the same target demographic of my research. The theme of the session was machine learning and Artificial Intelligence, specifically covering the concept of Machine Learning. It was a day-long event that took place in Atlanta on Dec 8, 2018. My role during this event was to provide technical assistance to the instructor and youth during the session. I was placed in the classroom for girls in the grades 7-12. Due to weather and travel, I was only able to volunteer for the second half of the daylong session. I gained experience assisting students working on their projects. I also gained experience as a facilitator. I plan to volunteer with this organization again.
PAGE Volunteer
During the PAGE day event at UGA, I served as a makerspace assistant. My duties included helping workshop participants in the makerspace session. I assisted with the makerspace origami station, the greenscreen station, and the paper plane station.
